Noeskwam:
A Model for a Qualitative Society

(Collection)

The collection Noeskwam shows a model for a qualitative society. Noeskwam is a garbage patch floating in the middle of the sea. Its residents have claimed this garbage island as their own, and are creating their utopia on it.

Together they form a tribe and create a new society that shows the importance of the playful elements in everyday life. The only resource they have is the waste and plastic that washes ashore. The tribe makes everything out of found material, from everyday objects to their clothing. They see it as a precious material, not just because this waste is their only resource, but also because plastic lasts forever. Noeskwam shows us a new way of approaching our plastic waste.

For my graduation collection, I created my utopia based on the philosophy of Johan Huizinga, The Homo Ludens. I used references such as Palle Nielsen-The Model, Celine Condorelli-Models for a Qualitative Society, and Constant’s Nieuwenhuys-New Babylon. Who created worlds and institutes around the same philosophy. This collection can be seen as a cultural expression of the human playing, who promote the rights of the game. They are my model for a qualitative society. Doing molding sessions with adults in an investigative, non-judgmental, playful way can lead to surprising creations.

In the outfits separately I work out characters, who each have a role in the culture on the island. I try to describe to them how they will relate to my utopia/culture. In the prints and in the textiles I especially want to be the playing person myself. I want to let the common come back, by giving each outfit something recognizable, which shapes it into a group or (sub) culture.

I question not only our society but also our existence in fictional worlds I create. The collections I make, become a wearable story itself on how we could live our lives. Whoever will wear it shall continue the story by use and play. I work with materials that are seen as garbage, but I would like to see it as a luxury.
